Fat Bodies and Fertility: Identifying the issues that inhibit access to IVF in the UK for people with a high BMI
Overview: 96% of NHS health boards and trusts continue to restrict subsidising IVF treatment to women with a BMI over 30 due to an apparent low rate of success of pregnancy or live birth (LBRs) and adverse health outcomes. But evidence about the fertility of obese and overweight women; and evidence of their complications in pregnancy is subject to debate. However, this study does not seek to determine the efficacy of delivering IVF to overweight and obese women. Instead, it seeks to determine the impact of denying women access to IVF based on their BMI and to determine routes of access to IVF.
